Our resident Texan, Taylor Brownlee knows and loves weddings. After receiving her degree in finance from the University of Texas, Taylor started her career working as planner for a five-diamond resort in Austin Texas. In 2007, Taylor traded her flip-flops for snowshoes and moved to Colorado where she worked for Beaver Creek Resort as an event coordinator, specializing in weddings. Drawing from her previous experience and impeccable taste, Taylor employs both creative and practical ideas to provide our clients with the wedding of a lifetime. Fun fact: Taylor came in second in a middle school handwriting contest and has yet to fully recover from the defeat.

A Winter Wedding at Rubywood

Many brides and grooms seek a private home for their small mountain wedding. Rubywood home is located on Boreas Pass in Breckenridge and overlooks the ski resort. It is ideal for a wedding of 55 or less and can be rented through Paragon Lodging.

I never tire of seeing love. Jen and Todd chose to have a first look before the ceremony. The combination of gorgeous light and their excitement was thrilling to see.

And here are some detail shots. Jen loves lots of orange and bright green. It was fun to use the colors in a winter wedding. The colors also complimented the private home interior. Note Jen's gorgeous feather wrap and hair piece. Perfection.

Wildflowers and Aspens- a Mountain Wedding

Katy and Aaron's wedding at the Keystone Ranch was a tribute to the natural environment and their family. The imagery captured by Autumn Burke sends me back to all of the love felt that day.

One of my favorite parts of being a wedding planner is working with the bride and her mother. As a mother, I understand how precious this day is.

It's beautiful to see how relaxed and elated Katy and Aaron are hearing their grandmother read.

My absolute favorite image captured. We must listen to the words of our grandparents. Their wisdom and love is breathtaking.

In my professional opinion, the flower girls and ring bearers cannot be cute enough. Feel free to add as much tulle, florals, and fabric as possible.

The bride's uncle did a stunning job of creating all of the floral arrangements. He hand picked the aspens and ordered the flowers. It looked like he went to the fields and simply gathered all of the materials and placed them in the jar. . . if only it was that easy :)

The use of barn wood boxes and mason jars brimming with wildflower varieties was the ideal compliment to the rustic ambience of the Keystone Ranch dining room.

Ned Archibald is the pastry chef for Keystone and his work is sugar artistry.

Open House!

Bella Design & Planning recently moved into an amazing new space and we had an open house last week to show it off! Here I am with one of our fabulous lead coordinators, Jenni. Jenni has been with our team for five years and is my right hand gal.

And here is Kelli, our event designer lounging on our new furniture, waiting to greet the guests as they arrived.

We were also celebrating the launch of Richard's Notebook website. People were checking it out live for the first time with our graphic designer and partner Liz.

The night was a great success, and we enjoyed the night chatting it up and showing off our new space! Special thanks to Harvest Catering and Bloom Flower Shop for providing lovely food and florals.

I had the pleasure of working with Studio JK on a photo shoot at the new Four Seasons Vail. Utilizing the warm colors of the ballroom, I created two different looks that compliment this stunning space. The first look has an old world vibe and features an antique water urn.

The second look takes on a more zen vibe, yet by using copper we are able to bring in the mountain/western feel. Our invitation company, Richard's Notebook, created the invitation and escort card.

Bella would like to introduce you to our newest team member, Kelli Holtz. She joins the team as our event designer and boy do we love her already! Kelli is a licensed interior designer and will be working with our clients to create event renderings, floor plans and concept boards. She is a Professional Member of The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and earned her B.A. from The Art Institute of Colorado, Magna Cum-Laude.

Kelli was born and raised in Traverse City, Michigan and now lives in Vail with her husband Chad and their St. Bernard Curtis. They enjoy all things fabulously Colorado including cooking, skiing, camping, traveling and spending time with great company. Kelli will be guest blogging from time to time on the Bella blog so stay tuned! You can also check out her blog, Green Bridge White House where she showcases her day to day work and life as a designer in Vail.

It's a small world. Laura and her family live only a mile and a half from my brother-in-law in Indiana. When we all met over Christmas break it took me a matter of minutes to get to their house and laugh at the coincidence. I'll say it. I love working with people from the Midwest. Don't get me wrong, I went to school on the East Coast, have family all over the South and adore vacationing on the West Coast, BUT it always feels like home when I work with my fellow Midwestern peeps. Laura chose an unusual and stunning color palette of grey, creme and yellow. I enjoyed the challenge of putting it all together to make a mountain modern design. Very cool concept, very cool couple.

The Vail Four Seasons Resort Photo Shoot

I had the pleasure of working with Joe and Joyce from Studio JK to style a photo shoot for the newly opened Vail Four Seasons Resort. The new property is for the luxury bride who requires impeccable service, doting employees and stunning guest rooms. It is an ideal wedding venue for a summer or winter event because it offers many "spaces" for event hosting. One of my favorite locations is the deck adjacent to a Residence property. The views are full mountain and then guests can flow into the Residence for cocktail hour. The ballroom is beautifully appointed, has high ceilings and has a palette of golds, reds, rusts and browns. I love the foyer with the grand piano and even the smaller ballroom. Can you imagine indoor/outdoor cocktails, dinner in the ballroom and then a dance or after party in the smaller ballroom? Keeping the guests moving and showing them surprises throughout the evening is the key to a successful event. Enjoy the high fashion photography of Joe and Joyce.

Engage 11: A Recap of the Beautiful Design

I just returned home from five days in San Diego at the Engage 11 conference/wedding guru pow wow. The top event designers and planners were in attendance to share stories, advice, resources, ideas and support. There were many motivational presentations by such greats as Simon Bailey, David Beahm and Diane Valentine. What they all said and what I've always believed (since my mid-30's anyway) is that one must not allow others to write the rules. I find this thought intrinsic to how I run my business. Certain things such as respect for your elders, and humility are steadfast rules in my book otherwise, don't label me, don't anchor me to tradition and certainly don't tell me that the way to do something is because it's how it's always been done. Creativity flows easier with less barriers. My other take away from this event was how many extraordinary people I met. For example, I dined with Julie Jones, owner of Encore Bridal, a couture bridal dress consignment website- LOVE THAT. Or Angela Desveaux, the Editor-In-Chief of Wed Luxe Magazine (a visual feast of real weddings and style shoots). The magazine is based in Canada but will be launching in the United States next year. Or the beautiful Karen Bartolomei, who owns and designs for Grapevine, a luscious invitation company. I also got to meet many of our industry icons such as Sylvia Weinstock, Abby Larson from Style Me Pretty, and Todd Fiscus. It was an incredible experience. Lauren and Noah's Charleston Wedding: A story of Love, Service and Family

I have been excited to write this blog about Lauren and Noah's wedding in Charleston, SC. There is an amazing story to be told. However, I wanted to wait until Lauren was safely in her new location before I started my gushing. Lauren, enjoy remembering your wedding!

The Story.

I met Lauren and her incredible mom, Lee in November. We worked diligently to plan Lauren and Noah's summer wedding to be held in Colorado. All of the contracts were signed, the vendors hand picked and then after a big hug they left to go back to their homes in TX and SC. Thirty minutes after they left, Lee called me very shaken. "Lauren just received a call from her superior. She is getting sent on an early deployment and leaves in March!" Shock. Tears. Recovery. We went into game plan mode and after a week, the decision was made to have the wedding in Charleston in February (in less than three months), and I would stay on as the planner. Three weeks later, I flew to Charleston and assembled an incredible team with MUCH thanks to Sha Sha and Leesa from Distinctive Events. They were wonderful collaborators (and now friends) and allowed me go to their warehouse and hand select everything I knew Lauren would love. They are an incredible team. Then my hotel representative, Jayne Long, from the Mills House was wonderful in helping us coordinate a scrumptious menu and bar. She runs a tight ship and for that I am grateful.

Then, the wedding week happened. I flew in that Wednesday, parked myself in the middle of the bustle and got to work making gift bags, searching for last minute jewelry, coordinating vendors (oh and shopping way too much on Kings Street AND eating way too much of the low country cuisine). During the days leading up to the wedding, I got to spend a lot of time with the family members and friends who had flown in. I loved every single one of them! It reminded me that good people find good people and that is why all of their wedding guests were delightful, because that is how Lauren and Noah's families are.

The big day was simply perfect. Lauren and Noah were so in love. No matter how much time one puts into design and planning, at the end of the day it's the love that makes the event.

Which brings me to my final point and that is LOVE. I love this family and they clearly love each other. We have become family, and I know that we will be in each other's lives for a long time. Lauren and Noah both serve in the Air Force. They are bright and kind people, and I feel safer knowing they are protecting and representing us. Be safe, Lauren and Noah. Today we have guest blogger Emily Campbell, Owner/Planner of Bella Design & Planning (Dylan List Member) sharing some advice on planning your rocky mountain wedding.

People who select the mountains for their wedding typically want to maximize these very mountains as their backdrop. Thus, the first step in planning a mountain wedding is to find someone who can show you all of the possibilities for venues. Since wedding planning typically follows the same steps regardless of your destination, it is most important to find someone who can be your local mountain guide. Wedding planners, venue representatives, and wedding blogs are all strong resources.

The next step is to set the date and then create your timeline. Having a clear plan for the wedding day not only gives you a sense of relief, it also shows you how many hours you will need to book your vendors.

The third step then is to select your vendors. The Rocky Mountains are home to extraordinary artists and wedding providers.

Once you have assembled your dream team, you are free to play with your wedding design. Many brides like to incorporate natural elements such as pinecones, birch or aspen covered vases, Manzanita branches with hanging votives, moss, burlap, wildflowers and aspen leaves. The wonderful thing about the mountains is that it’s beautiful everywhere so depending on your style you can simply use the natural setting and add accents of décor- thus keeping your décor bill down.

Most importantly, in planning your mountain wedding, remember that the mountains invoke peace so I encourage you to find venues and vendors that allow you to feel happy and calm. Best of luck in your planning process!

An Oxygen Bar for your Wedding

Recently, I checked out the O2 Lounge in Breckenridge. Sally and Guy, the lovely English owners, invited me to a cup of tea and an essential oil infused Oxygen break. I have to admit that I felt a little strange conversing with a lanyard in my nose BUT everyone else in the bar was doing it so I relaxed into it. Sally and Guy explained why their mobile O2 bar is a great addition to our high altitude weddings. They said it was a novelty and certainly entertaining. It also gave people a "boost" from the altitude effects. They claim the Oxygen bar provides 90-95% Oxygen therapy to boost your blood Oxygen and therefore can alleviate the effects of high altitude, help with the jet lag, boost energy after a hard day on the mountain, and even get you over a hangover. Well, if that's true, I'm buying! My ten minutes with the lanyard and little canister did give me a boost, and I felt a little clearer as I walked out the doors and on to my next appointment. An Autumn Wedding in Vail

Simply put, Michelle and Steve's wedding at the Vail Larkspur Restaurant was a visual feast. Let's just start with the tall, thin and stunning bride wearing Carolina Herrera. Then her dreamy bridesmaids in variations of Amsale "spice." Then the gorgeous groom wearing who knows what, just look at him! Moving onto the beautiful aspen grove set in the breezy tent and then into the restaurant that was glowing in ambers, burnt oranges, and oodles of candles. Cindy, from Bloom, is such an inspired floral designer. She reached perfection. The food was visually gorgeous as well, especially the dessert display of mini milkshakes and red velvet cake. The food created by executive chef, Amando, at the Larkspur is some of the most delicious food I ever tasted at a wedding. . . and I have had my fair share over the years. Enjoy the feast. . .

An Army Love Affair

I just watched our West Point Cadets win their first bowl game in 25 years. Go ARMY!!! Adan is an Army soldier who married the beautiful Corinne. Since my cousin (#87 Barr) plays for Army, Adan and I had a quick friendship and a solidarity behind Army football, oh, and wedding planning. Cori and Adan were married at the Keystone Ranch amid snow flakes. Yes, it was cold, but as my friend, Leon Littlebird, said, "Cori was exuding love and warmth." Cori loves stripes but hates any type of clutter. She is a graphic artist with an exceptional eye so we had a wonderful time constructing her wedding design. Oh, my, was she, and he, and it lovely.

An InStyle Wedding

When Liz Greenburg asked me to help plan her wedding, I had a physical reaction. It was a mixture of tight throat and rapid heart rate. Don't take me wrong, I had a wonderful chemistry with Liz, but when she told me she was the marketing director for InStyle Magazine my mind took off. What will she and her Manhatten fashionista friends and collegues think of rustic Colorado? How can I prevent the Manolo's from sinking into our natural setting? Do they like elk and bison? Are wildflowers and daisies her fancy?! Well, let me tell you, Liz and her crew couldn't have been more laid back and acclimated to my beloved Colorado. Not only did they have these little heal holders to prevent their designer shoes from sinking, but they do like our Colorado cuisine, s'mores and all. The evening was a relaxed soiree with top notch wines, cuisine, frisbee, big band music, lovely toasts, throw down dancing and a glorious bonfire. Liz and Clint, you have become dear friends. Thank you for inviting me to be a part of your absolutely beautiful Boulder wedding.

Wedding on the Family Ranch

Camille and Adam flew from San Francisco back to their roots in Colorado for a wedding on the family ranch! Everything about their wedding was down home, including the wedding ceremony held at the tiny Catholic chapel in Kremmling, CO (half way between Silverthorne and Steamboat Springs). A few random thoughts: Doesn't Camille look like a brunette Grace Kelly? If you are ever at the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, say hi to Camille. The Perfect Fall Wedding in Beaver Creek

The aspen leaves peaked on September 25, 2010 in Beaver Creek, CO and this just happened to be Ellie and Nick's wedding day. Spectacular! There are so many reasons why I loved this wedding so let me get started. 1.) Ellie and Nick are now my friends, and I plan on sharing many years of ski days with them 2.) The families of Ellie and Nick were supportive, loving, appreciative, enthusiastic, and FUN. I admire these families. 3.) I loved the decor design on this wedding because it fit so naturally with the western art and heavy wood interior. PS Ellie bought every brass candlestick, spittoon and vase available on EBAY so if you need some contact her! 4.) Nick is a fly fisherman and hand tied his boutonnieres! 5.) Cowboy boots are always cool.

July 4 Wedding Weekend in Vail

Lisa and Mark wanted to throw a 1950's Sinatra-style lounge party for their wedding reception. Mark loves cigars and good scotch. Lisa loves champagne and dancing. It was the perfect concept. They were married on top of the grand mountains at the Vail Wedding Deck, then transported their guests via gondola to the entrance of the luxury Arrabelle Hotel. Guests cocktailed and dined al fresco on the Great Room deck and then moved inside for dancing and dessert. A cool story: When Lisa and Mark had their first public appearance as a couple it was in Prague at Mark's company event. Mark and Lisa danced in front of everyone to the music of the most lovely English gent named Lewis Dixon. Well, they flew Lewis to Vail so he could sing again for them. He serenaded the guests during dinner, made the ladies swoon, and kept the late night dancing hopping till the Veuve dried up. Oh, how I wish I were a guest at this party because it was divine. Congratulations Mark and Lisa!!!!

Copper Mountain Wedding in June

Marie Antoinette goes to Casablanca. . . and rides a chair lift in her Manolos. Mindy and Joel fell in love while skiing at Copper Mountain and thus had to have their wedding there. However, Mindy wanted a regal affair. The Grand Room at Copper Station is a wonderful venue to morph into whatever the bride envisions. The huge windows and tall, tall ceilings PLUS the incredible food and service (some of the wait staff have worked at Copper over 20 years) make Copper Mountain a hidden gem. We had a great team assemble this masterpiece. Bloom Flower Shoppe, Pink Monkey Solutions, Studio JK, Squeeze Designz, and Great Time DJ. My Inspirational Trip to San Francisco

I just returned home from the inaugural Planners and Designers Academy in San Francisco with my creative collaborator Cindy with Bloom Flower Shop and my lovely assistant Kristen. From talking with the amazing magazine editor Grace Ormonde about the importance of good photography (OMG) to walking the flower market to listening to the inspiring Tara Guerard discuss the best wedding floor plan, I was in Heaven the entire four days. Oh, and I managed a trip to the SF Museum of Modern Art, to dine at the best sushi joint in town at Ozumo (thanks for the VIP treatment, Mel), dim sum at Yank Sings and luxury lodging at the Palace Hotel. I can't wait to start formulating my new ideas and collections.

Goodbye Maggie Jones

I recently attended the funeral of Maggie Jones. She was/is the mother of Toby Jones, a groom I worked with two summers ago. Maggie died very quickly from cancer so her death was a shock to many of us. It is difficult to say goodbye to someone you remember so fondly. My memory of her is one who was gracious and full of laughter. She was so conscience of welcoming her new daughter in law and making sure the rehearsal dinner was what she and the groom wanted. She was completely selfless and loved by all. She loved photographing wildflowers and hiking with her dogs on the Breckenridge trails. Being a wedding planner allows me to become quite personal with people, and I feel like I have built an extended family with so many families over the years. This is hard. I wish Maggie's family peace. On her funeral program was a lovely poem that I wanted to share. It is a good reminder to seek out beauty. My mom also loves this poem.

A Vibrant and Eclectic Mountain Wedding

I just received the photos from one of the coolest weddings of the season. April and Brian from St. Louis wanted a fun filled weekend for their small wedding group of 45. For their rehearsal night everyone was treated to a wagon ride through historic Breckenridge. Before they departed we served spiked cider in custom mugs. Then everyone went to Mother Loaded Tavern on Main Street for blue grass music and the best "and worst" of American cuisine. Fried spam anyone? The ceremony was held at Sapphire Point overlooking the majestic Ten Mile range and Lake Dillon. The very special, Leon Joseph Littlebird, officiated the intimate ceremony. Then guests were shuttled to Breckenridge for an elegant dinner at the super chic Relish Restaurant. I just love the vibrant flowers and decor created by Bloom Flower Shop. Cindy is the consummate professional. Finally, the beautiful photography was shot by our local Katie Girtman with Studio Kiva. Enjoy!

An Eco Chic Wedding in Breckenridge

Katy and Brian wanted a FUN, massive party for their wedding. They also wanted it to be relaxed, easy on the tradition, and most importantly ECO CHIC. My favorite components were the button bouquets and bouttoniers. OK, they did use flowers too, but not as many!!!! Some green ideas they incorporated were: no plastic water bottles, kegs instead of bottled beer, cranberry centerpieces, and herb pots that also served as favors (grown by the bride). Check out some of the cool things they did to achieve their goal. The wedding was held on the patio of Sevens Restaurant and the reception was held at the Great Divide Lodge. Both properties are in Breckenridge, CO.

The snowboarder and the preschool directress

It's the story of true mountain love. Morgan, a preschool directress and Ryan, a professional snowboarder sealed the deal in their hometown of Breckenridge, CO. It was a wedding of mostly local folk who came to celebrate the union of this beautiful couple. Morgan, her mom (Judy) and I had a blast planning this "organic, contemporary with a twist of funky" wedding. I can honestly say that Morgan was one of the prettiest brides I have ever seen. . . and I've seen a lot! Enjoy the play on green. . .

When Matt (the groom) told me he was planning the wedding I was a little hesistant. I had never planned with just the groom before. What if his style wasn't so good? What if he didn't have style? Would he care about all of the details? Would Libbie (the hardworking, first year lawyer) be happy with what we had created? Well, after I met Matt and Libbie, my concerns were alleviated. Thankfully, Matt not only had impeccable taste, but he loved (s) Libbie more than words can describe so therefore it was everything she dreamed. Libble looked like a an effortless wonder. Matt couldn't stop looking at her with the biggest grin. I love my job.

I had the pleasure of being the day of wedding coordinator for Heather Hawkins and John Torp, and I loved this wedding. Heather and her mom, Judy, created many beautiful touches such as putting guest books on each table that also served as table numbers. During the band break everyone went outside where sparklers, customized matchbooks and warm panini sandwiches were passed out to all the guests. It was a wonderful Fourth of July and a beautiful wedding in Breckenridge.

Everything about Mary Brielmaier and David Oetting's wedding spoke of romance in the mountains. What a glorious evening, what a majestic couple. The bride wore a custom made suede dress and the groom wore a tux jacket with jeans and cowboy boots. From Jim Salestrom's original compositions to the stunning buffet of quail and the best tenderloin I've ever had, the White Star Champagne kept flowing and the guitar jams lasted late into the night. Nicely done, Mary and David.

Rain Isn't So Bad for a Wedding Day

The month of June proved to be rainier than normal. Consequently, many of my June brides faced the decision of whether to "go for it" and hope the rain wouldn't rain on the ceremony or in the case of Anne Dawson and Luke Matske there was no choice. An afternoon full of rain showers required an indoor wedding half way up Keystone Mountain at the Summit House. Anne never thought she would be married in a ski bar, but she was and it couldn't have been more lovely. The wedding reinforced two important points a.) have a rain back up plan and b.) remember that the love of your life is about to say "I do" and therefore nothing could be more perfect. Enjoy the rainbows. . .

Laura and Odell had their dream winter wedding during an April blizzard, but their attention to the details so impressed their guests that everyone stayed warm and enchanted throughout the evening. What blizzard?

What is more perfect on a winter afternoon than a hot toddy and hot chocolate bar? The bride and groom wanted an apres ski feel for their cocktail hour.

Paying homage to the great weddings of your family's past is a sentimental statement.

This copper charger and fuscia phaleonopsis orchid create a beautiful frame for the dinner menu. Notice the copper wire wrapped around the vase. A little metal enhances the candle shimmer as night takes hold.
